Barn History
Locally and family owned by Thornhill Farms in Trufant in Sand Lake, Michigan.
This barn has had every inch lovingly restored.
The history of our barn is deeply rooted in the pioneering spirit of Emory Trufant, who acquired the land from the US Government in 1870. This area, now known as Kent and Montcalm County, encompassing the towns of Sand Lake and Trufant, was meticulously mapped by the United States General Land Office.
Mr. Trufant's legacy includes building the first water-powered sawmill in Trufant in 1872, which later evolved into a steam-powered mill under new ownership. The village of Trufant was officially established on March 10, 1875, named in honor of Mr. Trufant, acknowledging him as the first settler. Known as “The Stump Fence Capital of the World,” the town has a unique history where settlers ingeniously repurposed tree stumps into fences, some of which still stand today. The annual 'Stump Fence' festival celebrates this heritage each Labor Day weekend.
In 2018, the Thornhill family embarked on revitalizing this historic property, beginning with a cleanup and restoring the barn and converting the chicken coop into restrooms. While some structures reflect the passage of time, ongoing improvements and care ensure they are cherished.
Our barn, with its rich history and many enhancements over the years, stands as a testament to the dreams and craftsmanship of its past owners. Today, it offers a glimpse into the remarkable engineering feats of the late 1800s, inviting you to be part of its enduring story.
